Tonight, a little bit of history was made — in the world of The Office, anyway. Michael Scott (Steve Carell) finally met David Brent (Ricky Gervais), the star of the original version of The Office. Fans have been hoping that the two would meet for a long time but when it was announced that Carell was leaving the show, it looked like it wouldn’t ever happen. The cold opening features Michael and David running into one another at an elevator. The two form an instant bond over their questionable comedy tastes.

Gervais and Carell filmed the small bit last September and it was kept a secret until just last week. Gervais did the bit while in town for the Emmys and as a nod to Carell’s last year on the series.
